NorthKey’s school-based clinicians work with students, parents, teachers, counselors and other school professionals, as part of the school team, to effectively identify, plan and respond when social and personal issues arise. The familiar school setting often provides a natural and comfortable place for children to learn new skills, improve their self-esteem and enhance social and communication skills. School-based services we offer include: Assessment, evaluation and observation of the student in the classroom. Individual, family and group therapy in the school setting. Consultation with teachers and other academic program personnel. Groups focused on prevention and early intervention for substance use. Screening and referral to other appropriate community-based services. Community education and parent workshops. In-service training for school personnel. When required, our school-based team also facilitates referral to other NorthKey services, including adult behavioral health services, substance use services, prevention services and developmental disabilities services Our school-based services team offers an easier initial contact point for teachers, school counselors and administrators to NorthKey’s wide-array of therapeutic and support services. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child’s school-based treatment through family sessions and conferences.
Schools with at least 45 percent of their students on free or reduced lunch qualify for this program. A licensed public health dental hygienist examines the student's teeth, and then she and a dental assistant from the Health Department place protective dental sealants on the molars of children that show a need, provide dental cleanings, and apply fluoride to strengthen the teeth. If tooth decay is found, students are referred to a dentist and the school nurse, family resource center and the Health Department follows up.
